The Vancouver Island Norsemen are proud to announce they're the latest franchise in the league to participate in the SICHL For Good program, raising money and awareness for Bumrun Canada as part of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The club will be wearing custom jerseys for home games against the Havana Revolution and Hamburg Gladiators as part of their on-ice promotion of the initiative. Club management has also been engaged in a month-long commitment to run 5km every day in the month of March to help fundraise in support of the cause. The fundraising campaign successfully exceeded it's $5,000 goal. A donation link is available on the SICHL page under the Features tab on sichl.com. Colorectal cancer is a deeply personal cause for the Norsemen organization following a death in the family five years ago. As a hereditary disease, it will most likely continue to impact the extended family of the team across generations. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of death among cancers in Canada, and approximately one in 17 Canadians are expected to be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. Treatment of the disease is possible: when caught early, the five-year surivival rate is a robust 90%. However, later stage colorectal cancers are often fatal or result in life-altering surgery and treatment, emphasizing the critical importance of catching it early.  The entire Norsemen organization encourages the SICHL community to educate themselves about the signs, symptoms and risks of the disease, and to not hesitate to consult your medical professional if you have concerns or notice any changes. An uncomfortable discussion can help save lives.
