Norsemen Bolster Roster for Playoff Push and Next Season
The Vancouver Island Norsemen swung a pair of moves in advance of the deadline with an eye towards the next two seasons. The first transaction saw the Norsemen acquire Matt Duchene and Zach Whitecloud from the Stockholm Cougars in exchange for a 2025 2nd round pick and a 2026 3rd round selection. The 2025 pick converts to the Norsemen's 2026 1st round selection if a condition is fulfilled. Duchene has provided a valuable spark in 11 games to date with the club, scoring eight points in a top-six role. Whitecloud has had a more modest impact during his stay, with one assist while playing mostly in a third pair capacity. "We expect both of these guys to help us immediately whlie playing roles on our club next season," said GM MacInnis. "We are admittedly concerned with some of the long-term financial ramifications, especially with the new league rules around veteran contracts, but ultimately the risk was worth it to add these talents. Zach's probably going to come in and out of the lineup a bit down the stretch, but we see him filling EJ's role next season once he retires." The Norsemen also re-acquired, for the third time, Jamie Benn just before the deadline. Benn, who has played more than 1200 SICHL games, is expected to slot into the team's middle-six while providing a steadying veteran presence down the home stretch. The franchise gave up Tristan Luneau and a future 5th round pick in the trade. "Benn has been an icon for this franchise, and we appreciate his versatility. It was tough to give up a promising young defender like Luneau, but we felt this was a necessary move to be more competitive in this particular window with Sid," said MacInnis. The Norsemen currently sit fifth in the Canadian Conference, but are just four points ahead of the 9th place Schooners.
