Bench Brawl in the Yukon: Tocchet vs. Blackwood Erupts After Edmonton's Shot-Fest Humiliation

Whitehorse, YT – The Whitehorse Huskies' Ice Barn, the frozen heart of SICHL's northern frontier, became a battlefield Wednesday night. A 3-1 home drubbing by the Edmonton Supersonics wasn't just a loss—it was a total collapse that lit the fuse for an unprecedented bench explosion.
Mackenzie Blackwood, the Huskies' high-profile starter, was hung out to dry by Coach Rick Tocchet's radical lineup experiment. Lines were flipped upside down: Nathan MacKinnon bumped to the second unit, mismatched pairings everywhere, and a defense that looked like it was assembled in a blender. The result? Edmonton turned the game into target practice.
First period: 18 shots against, just 2 for Whitehorse. Score 2 zip. Blackwood faced a barrage but kept it scoreless early.
Second period: Nightmare 9-5 shots.
Third period: Huskies finally pushed back one goal (13-7 shots), but the damage was done. Edmonton's empty-netter iced the humiliating 3-1 final.
Next day at practice Blackwood unloaded on Tocchet over the disastrous changes: "This lineup is a joke—we're getting embarrassed out there!" Tocchet snapped back, defending his "shake-up" as necessary for a slumping team. Shouts turned to shoves, shoves to punches. Gloves flew in a raw, ugly scrap—two intense personalities trading blows while teammates scrambled over to break it up.
The fight lasted longer than it should have; players like Matthew Tkachuk and Mathieu Olivier finally hauled them apart. In the melee, Blackwood reportedly smashed his hand into Tocchet's face—possibly fracturing bones or spraining badly. Tocchet left bloodied; Blackwood clutched his hand and stormed off.
GM D.R. Morrison, who was in Penticton wrapping up the Portland trade of Adin Hill, caught the first flight back to Whitehorse. No comment from the airport: "I'll meet with everyone involved here in the Yukon before we head to Banff for the Small Market Showdown in two days. That's it for now."
The stakes are massive:
Tocchet's future and Blackwood star goalies hang in the balance.
