SICHL Team Legacy Rankings - Part 5
Fun Fact: Since it’s close to draft season, let’s talk first overall picks. In the SICHL, the first overall pick, prior to picking, has been traded to Regina in 2024 (Macklin Celebrini), to Hamburg in 2021 (Matty Beniers), to Stockholm in 2020 (Alexis Lafreniere), to the Norsemen in 2006 (Erik Johnson), the Montreal Dragons in 2004 (Evgeni Malkin), the Montreal Warriors (Dragons) in 2001 (Ilya Kovalchuk), and POSSIBLY the Boston Hitmen in the second 2000 draft (Marian Gaborik). If you look at the SICHL draft history, you’ll understand two things: first, trading first overall picks is a fairly recent trend, and second, Martin Levesque of the Montreal/Hartford Warriors/Dragons was an absolute menace.

NOTES: This team baffles me, so naturally they come up first in this group. The Red Devils came after my first team, the Roughnecks, folded, and were gone before my Calgary Mustangs joined the league, so I have no overlap with Cornwall at all. On top of that, it appears the Red Devils did not participate in an entry draft, so I can’t even say anything about some players they selected. I can say there are at least two notable players who played for them in 2003-2004 in Joe Sakic and Mattias Ohlund, and they seem to have done enough to keep the Red Devils from finishing in the basement. The truly mysterious thing is, when looking over goalkeeper records from that season, I can’t seem to pinpoint who played goal for the Red Devils. Last, but not least, there are a plethora of Cornwalls. There is one in Australia, another in Tasmania, three in Canada, one in Jamaica, and six in the United States, including my home state of Missouri. We can eliminate the Canadian Cornwalls, since this is the World Conference we’re talking about here. The likeliest candidate appears to be the Cornwall in South West England, even though it’s a county, but there does appear to be some relevant connections to the “Red Devils” there, as it is the nickname of their soccer team Manchester United, as well as a British parachute regiment of the British Army. Still, the details are unconfirmed, so I can officially entertain the idea that the Red Devils were, in fact, the fourth Missouri-based SICHL team located in the unincorporated community of Cornwall, Missouri. The Cornwall Red Devils came into the league after the Rochester Americans folded, then turned into the Amsterdam Admirals in 2004-2005.

NOTES: I’ll plead ignorance, I had to look up the location of Grande Prairie. Turns out, they were another Alberta team! When the Gremlins came in, there was a number of teams shuffling around. New to the league were the Gremlins, Prague Knights, Rochester Americans, San Bernardino Stallions, and the two expansion teams the High River Wild and Frankfurt Lions. On top of all that, infamous GM Martin Levesque took advantage of the Montreal Ice Kings leaving, and moved his Hartford Warriors to the other conference to become the Montreal Warriors. Along with the Ice Kings, the league also waved goodbye to the Springfield United, Minnesota Saints, and Calgary Wranglers. For the Gremlins, they failed to make the playoffs in three seasons, although they came really close a couple of times. Unfortunately, no points for almost, at least when it comes to playoff berths! After three seasons, the Gremlins, along with a few other teams, folded and made way for the Ottawa Slammers, St. John’s Cannibals, and Thunder Bay Nailers.

NOTES: Yet another first year team that lasted exactly one year. They missed the playoffs by a few points, and didn’t participate in the entry draft that following off-season. They did participate in the first dispersal draft, where they took one of my all-time favorite players in Zigmund Palffy, but with the Lobos I have to say they are the perfect example of that type of team I mentioned before: they moved out a lot of their original pieces that first year. Palffy and Shane Doan got moved to the New York Empire during the season, Bryan Berard went to the LA Spartans before the season began, ditto for Jozef Stumpel to the Vancouver Ruff Ryderz and Craig Billington to the Porcupine Gold Kings. When the dust settled on the season, the only top players that remained with the Lobos all season were Mathieu Schneider and John Vanbiesbrouck. The Lobos spot was moved to the other Canadian Conference division and became the Jasper Ice Hawks.

NOTES: I have to admit, I was shirking my duties during the data collection phase of this project. I was caught off-guard by this team name popping up in the original dispersal draft, basically because I didn’t recall that they existed! Naturally, I checked the standings, and put together that the Blast did not make it to the regular season, truly a team worth remembering for their failure to even make it long enough to play a single game. What I failed to realize with this team did not even finish the original draft, a fact I had to verify with our Commissioner. The original draft was not a live event (although maybe the first round was, I really don’t recall), but an event that took days to complete. The Baltimore Blast lasted 6 rounds, and honestly had quite a haul, coming away with Nicklas Lidstrom, Jason Allison, Jeremy Roenick, Pat Verbeek, Rick Tocchet, and Chris Therien. The draft was then taken over in round 7 by the Hershey Dragons, who went on to actually play that season. The Blast get the special moniker of “First Year Failure” because, let’s face it, it’s quite a feat to not even finish a draft.

NOTES: There is plenty to say about the Bears, but where to begin? The 2005-2006 season saw three new teams come into the league: the Calgary Mustangs, Nova Scotia Schooners, and our Acadia Golden Bears (later changed to Grizzly Bears for…reasons). After twenty seasons, the Bears are one of the most decorated teams in the league, having won four cups, including a back-to-back cup achievement. This most recent season, the Bears did something they’ve only done only once before in twenty seasons: miss the playoffs. That means 18 out of 20 seasons the Bears have made the postseason, and that’s no easy feat, especially in the Canadian Conference (wink). The Bears have a reputation for being a competitive team year in, year out. I might be bold to say this, but the Bears have also taken up the mantle left by Martin Levesque as the draft king. Guy has an excellent draft history, and he has harnessed that success in key trades that bolstered his lineup year after year. An example of Guy’s wheeling and dealing leading to results: they may have made the playoffs 18 out of 20 seasons, but they have drafted in the top 10 in six entry drafts. More impressively, two of those top ten picks were after the Bears won back to back Commissioner’s Trophies in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 - clearly Guy had a way of extracting valuable 1st round picks from GMs (don’t worry, I won’t investigate to name names, you know who you are)! One recent bit of news: the Bears likely celebrated after the Havana Revolution lost a single game in the World Conference finals to the London Monarchs. Why? Well the Revolution were 9-0 going into game 2 of the World Conference finals, and many were thinking “could we see another perfect year?”, an achievement only seen once in all of SICHL history by the Bears in 2007. Even more impressive: it wasn’t during the asterisk season! Truly a high mark for a team chock full of high marks. The Bears came out of the dispersal of the Cannibals, Nailers, and Pucks, and began their quests for the Cup with picks like Jose Theodore, Daymond Langkow, Olli Jokinen, Cam Ward, and Danny Markov. Currently, they’re looking to make a strong push in the 2025-2026 season with long time captain Claude Giroux and players like Brock Faber, Logan Thompson, Logal Stankoven, and, of course, Mikko Rantanen. I imagine Guy will only keep adding to his Legacy score.

NOTES: No,not those Americans and no, not those Americans, but yes we did have our own Rochester Americans for two seasons. As mentioned at the top of this list, the Rochester Americans became the Cornwall Red Devils, and before they were the Americans they were the Minnesota Saints. There is not much here to write about: they’re a team that missed the playoffs - barely - both seasons, and didn’t finish at the bottom of the league either season. Their entry draft participation, I can say, they were present, and that’s about it.. The only pick to write home about was Dan Boyle in the 8th round in 2001, the rest were big nothing burgers in the SICHL. Their roster players were also not of the star variety, with Sami Kapanen, Brian Boucher, Manny Fernandez, Shawn McEachern, rookie Ville Nieminen, and an aging Joe Nieuwendyk. Maybe, given a few more seasons, the Rochester Americans could have achieved more success, however looking at their roster and their entry draft results, I think it’s far more likely they were bound for a couple of bottom finishes. I guess get out before disaster strikes, eh Rochester?

NOTES: Thought I would include this one for a chuckle. This is another failure-to-launch team, in a way. I can let Eric tell more of the story here, but basically his team was originally the Halifax Schooners, and they were under different management before Eric took over before games were played. This team participated in the dispersal draft and free agency, and had no entry draft picks. At some point, the team changed their name to the Nova Scotia Schooners, although exactly why is a little bit of a mystery. My working theory is there was a GHA team in Halifax, which required a name change, but that is for Mark, Mike, and/or Eric to weigh in on. After the reins were turned over to Eric, the team became 100% his, so I’ll talk about his successes and failures, but mostly successes, in his installment. Salute to the Halifax Schooners, and praise to the name change because Nova Scotia Schooners is waaay better!

NOTES: If you are familiar with Always Sunny in Philadelphia and that popular meme of Charlie’s conspiracy board, that’s how I feel trying to keep track of all of the iterations of Winnipeg teams in the SICHL. The Senators were a one off: played for a season, finished second to last, then checked out the very next season. They came in after the Halifax Blues were dissolved, then were themselves dismissed and replaced with the Thunder Bay Nailers. Of note, the Senators did enjoy the rookie season of one of my favorite players, Henrik Zetterberg. They were also backstopped by Fred Bathwaite, which might explain much of the near bottom finish and an early exit from the league.

NOTES: Let’s bring this around full circle: remember when I said the Rochester Americans got out while the getting was good? Well, a bonus fun fact here, the Amsterdam Admirals picked up where the Americans left off. Doubt me? Check out the draft history of their rebranded team: the Brno Barons. That’s right, the Brno franchise has not been dispersed since 2005, and has a draft history that stretches back for 20 seasons. As for the beginning of the Amsterdam Admirals, it went about as well as expected, missing six straight playoff berths and finishing at the bottom of the league 5 of those 6 seasons. The question is, what did the Admirals get for their pain? In 2004, at 7th overall, the Admirals selected Rostislav Olesz. Whiff. In 2005, at 2nd overall, their pick was used to take Jack Johnson, but that pick ended up with the Philadelphia Fire Ants. in 2006, their pick was 2nd overall but the Admirals still didn’t own their pick, and it was used by the Chicago Buccaneers to take Phil Kessel. Mitigating disaster was they did have a pick at 7th overall, where they took Kyle Okposo, who played zero games with Amsterdam and ended up on…the Philadelphia Fire Ants. I’m seeing a trend here. In 2007, again at 2nd overall, the Admirals managed to keep their pick this time and scored Sam Gagner. As they say in Chernobyl: not great, not horrifying. Finally, in 2008, the Admirals finished first! And by that, I mean they got the 1st overall pick, and took center Steven Stamkos, a player you might better recognize…on the Philadelphia Fire Ants. The back half of the Admirals’ existence was more successful than the first, appearing in the playoffs for six straight seasons with home ice in four of six of those berths. In 2013, the Amsterdam Admirals traded budding star Steven Stamkos to Philadelphia and notorious Lowball Norm for Bobby Ryan, some cash, and the player Philly took with their first Admirals’ pick, Jack Johnson. Full. Circle.

NOTES: Let’s round this edition out on a somber note and recognize one of the all-time GMs in the SICHL. Doug Karnes ran the Brandon Wheat Kings - no not those Brandon Wheat Kings - from the beginning of the league. He participated in the original dispersal draft, selecting the likes of Pavel Bure, Brendan Shanahan, Wade Redden, Chris Gratton, smooth skating Oleg Tverdovsky, and goaltenders Mike Richter and Sean Burke. Bure was later traded to the Porcupine team prior to puck drop on the first regular season, but overall Brandon had a solid team from the jump, and solid would be what Doug’s Wheat Kings would be known for. In his 24 seasons, he won the Commissioner’s Trophy once and made the Cup finals once, but every single year Doug had a team worthy of a playoff spot. Also of note, the Wheat Kings gave the Schooners probably the biggest scare during their threepeat by taking them to 7 games in 2020-2021. Quite famously, the Wheat Kings rarely had their own draft picks, and chose instead to use the picks to bolster his roster. He made that formula work! Many of us met Doug at the first live draft in Edmonton, and I think I speak for us all when I say he was every bit of a gentleman and, as the kids say, a “good hang”. I recall a speech he made about how special the league and how close we had all become. I want to say the speech was in Mike’s backyard, but my brain could be playing tricks on me there. I still have a business card from Doug, showing him enjoying some sun on a beach, probably enjoying a Mojito, and in big lettering under his name it says “Retired”. A few years after that, he retired from the SICHL before the 2022-2023 season, where three new teams joined via dispersal: the Toronto Rex, Regina Bisons, and Jacksonville Gators. Their spot in the Canada West division was filled by Regina. Godspeed, Doug!
