The Vancouver Island Norsemen made a trio of moves to bolster the team’s chances for the current playoff push and next season.

The first transaction was to pick up pending unrestricted free agent Alex Kerfoot in exchange for a 2023 3rd round pick from the Vipers. The versatile winger was picked up as a middle six player who can contribute to the team’s penalty kill and help lock down games. In six games with the team he has a pair of assists and a strong plus-four rating.

The biggest move was a one-for-one player swap that brings Mikael Granlund to the Island. The Swede immediately slots in on the top six and as a contributor to the powerplay. Signed for one more deal, the team anticipates him playing an even greater offensive role next season, moving between forward and wing. The Norsemen sent Eetu Luostarinen the other way in the deal.

“We’re stronger today than we were a few weeks ago,” said GM MacInnis. “Ideally we could have made one more big addition to our forward group, but there wasn’t a good match available. “If we can avoid the string of injuries that has hit us the last few late seasons and playoffs, we’ll be a tough team out. But first we need to finish up strong and find the right combinations with our new guys.”

The club also picked up $3.5 million in cash from the Calgary Mustangs for a future late round pick.
