Tonight, the Edmonton Supersonics will play the Vancouver Vipers in the final game of what has been a disappointing 2020-2021 season. Hoping to continue their storied history of playoff appearances, the team struggled out of the gate. A franchise-altering mid-season trade that saw Blake Wheeler sent to their provincial rivals for Nikolaj Ehlers and Linus Ullmark was meant to turn the tide, but an Ullmark injury during his first week with the team essentially dashed all hopes for turning around the season.

But rather than dwell on what could have been, on this night the Supersonics franchise and its fans will be celebrating the life and career of Colby Cave, as he has been recalled from the Winnipeg Spitfires and will dress for what will be his last eligible game in the SICHL.

Cave has always been the prototypical "in-betweener" player: an excellent pro who brings leadership and professionalism to an organization and can serve as both a mentor to younger GHA players, while also being a excellent supporting player with the SICHL club. He scored 6 points in 53 SICHL games, in addition to an impressive 294 points in 265 GHA games.

"I always appreciated Colby as a player," said Supersonics GM Mike Franceschini. "He brings a certain work ethic to the rink, and even casual fans could just tell that you were getting an honest effort from him every time he stepped on the ice. Having scouted him up close for the past few seasons, he became a bit of a dark horse favorite of mine, and we kept him on the radar to one day add him to our lineup."

The Supersonics eventually acquired Cave from the Chicago Tigers on September 19th, 2020.

"Sheetal (Tigers' GM Khera) deserves special mention for making this happen," continued Franceschini. "We expressed our interest in the player last summer and the rest of the details were put together by him. He didn't have to do this for us, but that he did speaks vollumes to the type of person Sheetal is."

In the midst of his best season ever in the GHA, Cave scored 44 goals and added 33 assists for 77 points in 50 games with the Spitfires. He will finish his career with 1 game for the Supersonics.
