Goalie Sale Continues in Acadiaby Guy Flaming | February 22, 2008, 2:59 PM ET
Hot on the heels of shipping Fredrik Norrena off to New York the Acadia Golden Bears have sent fan favorite Curtis Sanford to Stockholm. Sanford had been with the club since its inception back in 2005, claimed in the dispersal draft that year. It wasn't until the next season that he got into a game for the Bears but he immediately struck a chord with the fan base peeling off 4 straight victories. The 27-year-old made 9 appearances with Acadia this season, mostly in relief, and has a 1-2-1 record. In exchange for the backup GM Flaming has acquired 3rd and 5th round draft picks for 2008 as well as 28-year-old Swedish netminder Bjorn Bjurling. "The picks are nice to have of course," said Flaming, "we have quite a stockpile now and feel comfortable with our position looking ahead to the draft." In regards to the veteran netminder, one has to wonder why he was even included in the package. "Our Euro scouts have liked the way that he's played for Sodertalje this season and we'd like to think that coming to North America eventually might be something he'd consider," shrugged Flaming, "It's obviously a project but who knows, one day it might pay off." As a result of moving two of their goaltenders this week, veteran Patrick Lalime has been recalled from Colorado and will dress behind Rick DiPietro. "Part of the reason we felt we could move Freddie and Sandy was because of the way Patty has played on the farm this year," said Flaming, "I fully expect he'll challenge for a bigger role with our team next year." Next season it would appear that Lalime will battle Jason Labarbera and Jimmy Howard for the position behind perennial starter DiPietro.
