Seattle update at winter break; complete big dealby Phil Lesage | January 13, 2019, 10:47 AM ET
The surprise team in SICHL in 2019 has to be the expansion Seattle Grunge. Pundits predicted a tough inaugural season for the Grunge, but low and behold at the 1/4 mark the Grunge sit atop the World Conference; are on a 6 game winning streak and are 1 point up on the St. Louis Spartans with 2 games in hand.
Following the team's last game before the break GM Phil Lesage met with coach Bill Peters to discuss the first quarter and the GM came away with a request from the coach; need some bodies to increase offense which with 70 GF sits 15th OV and bolster the power play which is 12 OV with a 19.51%.
Today, GM Lesage attempted to honour this request acquiring left shooting defenseman TJ Brodie and veteran LW UFA to be Chris Kunitz from the Boston Colonials. Going back to Boston in the deal are defensemen Jake Dotchin and Brendan Smith, LW Tyler Wong, two 2nd round picks (2019 and 2020) and a 4th in 2021. Also coming back to Seattle are couple of picks (Ott 4th 2019 and Bos 5th 2020).
Brodie 27 is in the final year of his $4.25 annual contact,is a smooth skating puck moving defenseman that is reliable defensively. Brodie will likely be paired with Nikita Zaitsev in the second pairing, and be paired with Byfuglien on the first PP until
Kunitz 38 will be a UFA after this season, is a gritty winger and will provide some scoring depth and invaluable leadership.
Although the club did increase payroll by $3M, moving Dotchin, Wong and Smith were keys to deal as GM Lesage was able to move two admittedly bad long term contracts in Wong and Dotchin.
Only time will tell if this this deal enable Seattle to maintain their positioning?
