Colonials Deadline Dealings

by Gary Graves | March 19, 2018, 12:44 PM ET

Heading into deadline weekend the Colonials plan was to stay quiet and not make any crazy shamrockian type deals for fear of pulling a schooner! Last thing fans would want to see is the team plummeting down the standings after the all-star break.

That said the phone rang Thursday evening while GM Graves was watching a Murder She Wrote marathon on A&E and low and behold it was GM Burch looking for a 4th line upgrade at center. He simply asked “Is Burmistrov or Grigs available?”

Graves response was “EDM 4th round pick in 2018 and a GHA slug would do it” and then he quickly flipped off the TV and fell asleep.

The next day Burch came back with a deal that saw Mikhail Grigorenko leaving Pawtucket and heading back to the SICHL via Calgary. The Colonials took GHA veteran Pat Cannone and EDM 2018 4th rounder.

“Grigs was on his way to the KHL next year and we aren’t sure if he is ever coming back so grabbing a pick was a no brainer” said GM Graves on the deal.

While checking his email, Graves noticed an email from the Spartans shopping UFA veterans, Tomas Plekanec and Chris Kunitz. The asking price wasn’t terribly bad and a few emails were exchanged, but no deal was struck.

Next up, GM Graves put aside the rivalry to meet with his nemesis GM Oram of the London Monarchs for some of Newfoundland’s finest cooking at a small restaurant in Ottawa. The two GMs were on business in the Canada’s Capital and decided to talk trade.

Names were thrown around and after a couple of hours and a heated exchange, the pair agreed on a minor swap of picks. The Monarchs send the Colonials their 7th round pick in 2018 in exchange for Dublin’s 6th round pick in 2019

Deadline day:

Graves was still intent on keeping things quiet but then decided to circle back to Plekanec. After a quick message to GM Gallagher, the Spartans GM was ready to take an asset just to move the contracts and UFAs to be by taking a 3 round pick for both Kunitz and Plekanec. While waiting for responses back, Graves began shopping Kunitz and to some degree Plekanec with the goal of acquiring additional picks. “Take lemons and make lemonade was the plan” said Graves, but settled on a deal to send Kunitz to Dublin for a 5th round pick.

End of day, things shook out like:

To Colonials : Tomas Plekanec, STL 5th 2018

To Shamrocks : Chris Kunitz

To Spartans: EDM 3rd 2019

The acquisition of Plekanec gives the Colonials an upgrade at 4th line center and the lines shake out as follows:
