Caution! Turbulent Revolution Aheadby Che Guevara | February 27, 2018, 4:54 PM ET
After literally a month and a half of 0.450 hockey Revolution GM Prozeller and Coach Gilmour seemingly have had it with the poor performances delivered night in and night out by arguably one of the better assembled teams (on paper) in the SICHL this season. Back to back 17 shot performances by a healthy squad were just too unacceptable to tolerate. Leading to Coach Gilmour stating that the level of play needs to pick up, and then GM Prozeller backing those words with a threat that he will make more changes if the team can’t get it together.
All of this coming on the heels of a series of deals made by GM Prozeller to improve the squad, adding roster defensemen Tyler Myers and Kris Russell give the Revolution one of the deepest defensive cores in the SICHL. “They are scratching defensemen that would play in my 2nd pairing” scoffed an anonymous GM. But GM Prozeller didn’t stop on defense, adding scoring forwards Tanner Pearson and Mikael Backlund with mixed reviews. What should be a strengthened team pushing towards the top of the SICHL standings has been in free fall, mired in inconsistent play. If it wasn’t for this team’s strong start which saw them win 26 of their first 36 games they would be a basement dweller clawing their way towards a top five pick.
The silver lining is the players seem to have gotten the message. The fun and games have stopped. The beach days….stopped. The cigar factory tours….stopped. The afternoons spent at the team luxury pool complex….stopped. Captain Tyler Seguin addressed the media Monday night after a team only day, where the players got together offsite to bond and regroup in hopes they can right the ship, “I don’t want this to sound like a sound bite but yes we get it, we must do better. This is a group of guys that want to win, and we know the fans are behind us but if we don’t put up the points it doesn’t matter what our individual stats are. I think you will see a renewed commitment from us going forward.”
Team points leader and assistant captain Brent Burns wasn’t as kind to himself and teammates, “We have been awful, I mean I have been great, look at my stats I’m basically leading the whole league in scoring AS-A-DE-FENSE-MAN, but everyone else needs to pick it up. The coaches and management went out and got us help, better players and we stink up the place, that’s not cool. We have to find ways to score but more importantly we gotta keep the shots off of Pekks because he’s been equally as bad. Honestly I don’t know why they are still starting him? Maybe he’s secretly a Castro?”
Coach Gilmour also had some choice words for his squad, “Goaltending does need to pick it up, we have who we feel is an elite goaltender in Pekka Rinne and there are nights he plays like it and night where he is off dreaming, and it is showing. We have been sheltering young Connor Hellebuyck but maybe soon he does get the green light, perhaps it is time. Tanner is another guy who needs to step up, he has a lot of potential but just isn’t living up to any of it right now.”
Pearson is a perfect example of Havana’s recent struggles, since being traded from the Boston Colonials to the Revolution he has played 24 games gathering (2,11) 13pts. And his shooting percentage, you ask, a miserable 3.8%, which by the way is one of the lowest shooting percentages in the league for a forward with over 50 shots.
GM Prozeller initially declined to be interviewed, but later sent a short statement that reads as follows:
“The Revolution fans deserve and expect us to be a winning squad, we have done our best to get this team situated and supported them with all the tools necessary to get the job done. Our goal is a Continental Cup, anything short of that is a failure. I have the greatest faith in the coaching staff and players to carry out this goal hence why I spent so much time assembling them. Having said that, I have been wrong before and can be proven wrong again, we have 3 weeks until the trade deadline and the play of this team will dictate how we respond.”
