In the System - A Peek Ahead to the Future Colonists

by Gary Graves | December 27, 2017, 11:48 AM ET

Daniel Sprong - Currently with the WBS Penguins in the AHL, Sprong has 22 points in 27GP (15G, 7A). Daniel is leading the Pens in goals and points. While Sprong needs a bit of polishing defensively, he has future top-six Colonial sniper written all over him. Grade: A

Victor Mete – A surprise this season making the Habs out of camp. While is ice time has diminished, the speedy and skilled defenceman has 4 assists in 27 GP. Mete has since been loaned to Team Canada at the WJC 2018. Mete has been named an alternate captain. Hard to say if he will go back to the OHL afterwards but he is looking like a top 4 D with the Colonials in the future. Grade: A -

Filip Chlapik – Has 15 points thru 27GP ( 6G, 9A) with the Belleville Sens in the AHL and currently tied for the team lead in points. Chlapik is working at rounding out his game in the minors and not looking out of place in his first season of pro hockey. He’s been on an upward trajectory for the past year and looks to be a future 2nd line power forward with the Colonials. Grade: B +

Maxime Comtois – Drafted 58th overall in 2017, Comtois is on a point per game pace with the Tigres of the QMJHL (29 GP, 15G, 14 A, 29PT). Comtois will suit up for Team Canada at the WJC 2018. Despite not attending the Summer Showcase, Comtois’ play earned him and invite at the final selection camp where he made the team. He is expected to play a 4th line role and be used on the PK. Grade: B

Anatoli Golyshev – Currently in the KHL, Golyshev has drawn some comparisons to Artemi Panarin (Colonials will be happy with a ½ Panarin) . With the Yekaterinburg Automobilist, Golyshev has 16 points thru 26 GP. Grade: D

David Pope – Pope, a senior at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, is leading the team with 19 points in 16 GP. After a disappointing sophomore season, Pope broke out last season with 13 goals and 31 points in 34 games, and has showed a lot of progress in his overall game although his skating, while it has gotten better, still needs some work. Grade: C

Mitchell Vande Sompel – Playing with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in the AHL, Vande Sompel has 14 points in 24 GP with a +/- minus 6. MVS has high end puck moving skills but needs development on the defensive side of the coin. Grade: C +

Adam Ollas-Mattsson – Not sure where to project AOM. He is currently with the Stockton Heat in the AHL with no points in 14GP and a +/- plus 5. He hasn't been an everyday regular in the lineup but is showing development in his skills. Grade: D -

Nicolas Meloche- Nic started the season with the AHL Rampage but was assigned to the ECHL after 17 GP. Playing big minutes in a lesser league is better than the press box in the AHL I suppose, but this is not a great sign. Grade: C -
