Supersonics Hire Bourassaby Kent Clark | July 29, 2017, 10:32 AM ET
The Edmonton Supersonics have added to their front office with the hiring of former Winnipeg Falcons General Manager Michel Bourassa.
"We're thrilled to add Michel to the Edmonton Supersonics organization," said GM Mike Franceschini. "Michel has won two Continental Cups and has also managed two Commissioner's Trophies, which we have yet to win as a franchise. This will be our first goal."
This essentially formalizes a role that Bourassa has held for nearly twenty years.
"I've valued Michel's hockey acumen for many years, but competitive integrity has made it difficult to seek advice on specific moves I've tried to make over the years," said Franceschini. "We used a lot of code words and metaphors when discussing players, and sometimes we weren't quite on the same page. I'm pretty sure this is how I ended up drafting Jakub Klepis in the first round back in 2002, and he got Jiri Hudler with the next pick."
The Supersonics are coming off their worst season in their 20-year history, where they missed the playoffs for only the second time in franchise history despite having a veteran roster that was among pre-season favorites.
"We have a high draft pick this August, and we really need to hit this one out of the park," said Franceschini. "Our goal next year is to re-tool on the fly and hopefully make the playoffs while building a team that will compete for many years to come."
