Top Ten Prospects for 2017

by Dave Smith | October 8, 2016, 6:24 PM ET

The 2017 SICHL draft is a long way off, but it's never too early to take a look at hockey's future. Just ask the SICHL's Central Scouting Service and ISS Hockey, both of which released their first set of prospect rankings for the 2017 draft.

But first, here are our top 10 prospects to watch entering the 2016-17 season, with a quick quote analysis on each player

1. NOLAN PATRICK, C, Brandon (WHL) The quote: "Patrick is as complete an SICHL package as you are going to find. From his pedigree, his skills and assets, to his performance impact to date, he has everything any SICHL team is looking for in a top prospect." -- Dan Marr, director of Central Scouting Service

2. TIMOTHY LILJEGREN, D, Rogle (Swe. Jr.) The quote: "The undisputed top defenseman in this draft and, at this point, it's not even close. ... He's an elite skater, both in terms of speed and agility, and adept at running a power play. He is seen as both a puck mover and an offensive point producer." -- Bob McKenzie, TSN Hockey Insider

3. KLIM KOSTIN, C, Dynamo (KHL) The quote: "Kostin is a powerful and offensively gifted player ... who has performed very well internationally for Russia. A big, strapping kid with skill and power." -- Ryan Kennedy, The Hockey News

4. GABRIEL VILARDI, C, Windsor (OHL) The quote: "Vilardi will be counted on to provide scoring, minutes and leadership. It's almost the perfect storm for the second-year forward." -- Dave Jewell, The Hockey Writers

5. MAXIME COMTOIS, LW, Victoriaville (QMJHL) The quote: "Comtois is the top prospect in the QMJHL and one of the more skilled prospects for the draft. In addition to him being an offensive threat in every situation, what makes him intriguing is his compete level, which is always hard and smart." -- Marr

6. EELI TOLVANEN, LW, Sioux City (USHL) The quote: "An ultra-skilled winger, Tolvanen is a top 2017 SICHL prospect with excellent playmaking ability. ... He has a wicked release and 'all the moves on the joystick,' as one scout delightfully put it." -- Ryan Kennedy, The Hockey News

7. KRISTIAN VESALAINEN, LW, Frolunda (Swe. Jr.) The quote: "He's big, strong and really good with his stick. He shoots really well and he's going to be so good. -- Jacob Larsson.

8. CALLAN FOOTE, D, Kelowna (WHL) The quote: "A 6-foot-4, 200-pound blueliner, it's inevitable that Foote has some similarities with his NHL father Adam, but he's more of a mobile defender than a shutdown specialist." -- Kelly Friesen, Yahoo Sports

9. OWEN TIPPETT, RW, Mississauga (OHL) The quote: "The Steelheads winger has NHL speed, an SICHL shot and the physical tools to play a strong drive-the-net game. He is, however, considered by scouts to be a little one-dimensional. ... When he's not scoring goals, he's not as likely to be contributing in other ways." -- McKenzie

10. CASEY MITTELSTADT, C, Green Bay (USHL) The quote: "Has speed, quickness and agility and can use it to a great advantage on the attack or in tight areas to create space for himself and opportunities for his team." -- McKenzie
