Falcons Survive Vegas

by Michel Bourassa | June 23, 2014, 8:17 PM ET

It was a lot closer than the Falcons wanted but in the end the pre-season favourites to win it all, did just that. It is the Franchises second Championship in the last 5 years and there may be one more good run in this group of veterans.

The game was an instant classic with all three goals coming in the third period. Once again Zach Parise was clutch in scoring his playoff leading and Frachises single season record 6th game winning goal of the playoffs. What can be said about Henrik Lundqvist. The 12th round draft pick (274th) in the 2001 entry draft once again came through with a solid performance when it mattered. "This win means a lot to the group of guys in this dressing room. There have been rumours that the team would be completely overhauled if we didn't come through with a Championship. Now we are already talking repeat!"

After the Falcons breezed by the over-hyped Acadia Golden Bears there were some concerns of a let down. "Acadia was the one we wanted. We were getting sick and tired of hearing how good Acadia was. It's the playoffs that matter and we showed them." said the fiery GM of the Falcons. The Falcons didn't play 7 great games in the finals but the did what they had to do to win.

This was the first Championship for Playoff leading scorer Joe Thornton. Joe is one of the original members of the Winnipeg/Boston/Peterborough franchise but was traded away during the 2008-09 season and didn't return until the 2010-11 season just missing the 2009 cup run. "This is special for me. My heart has always been with this Franchise and I am just so thankful that we get to bring another Championship to the great city of Winnipeg"

The Falcons have a lot of decisions to make in the off season as 8 members of the cup winning team are scheduled for Unrestricted Free Agency. Depth played a big part in the championship as the 4th line of the Falcons (Steve Ott, Chris Higgins and Craig Adams) were a combined + 36 in the playoffs including Adams' playoff leading +14.
