Admirals Off to Mediocre Startby Wendal Spark | January 2, 2012, 3:28 AM ET
The Amsterdam Admirals have started off on a slightly mediocre streak due to inconsistant play all throughout the line up.
The young (expensive) goaltending duo has looked amazing at times and flustered at others. A key to this team this season will be if Howard can regain form and rookie goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky can be a bit more consistant in their play. Both young tenders have the potential become #1 goaltenders, but neither seem to be there just yet.
In a minor move, the Admirals have acquired forward Justin Abdelkader, forward prospect Justin Shugg and a 6th round pick from the Acacia Golden Bears in return for gritty LW Scott Hartnell and forward prospect Riley Smith. The Hartnell move now opens up a roster spot for some younger players ready to take a shot at the SICHL. Mikkel Boedker, Justin Abdelkader, and Chris Thorburn seem to be the top candidates to slot into Hartnell's roster spot.
This is the first move of the new calendar year for the Admirals. GMKL was reached for this comment, "We're off to a lackluster start. I know this team can do better, and it will do better. We didn't need another blockbuster move, but Guy and I talked, and he felt Hartnell would be a good addition to his team. I felt like Abdelkader would be a good fit for the team moving forward. We lost a veteran presence, but this move was the future. We needed some younger roster guys, and Justin is agreat fit. We're hoping the competition for the 3rd line roster spot boasts a bit more energy and effort out of the squad. "
